Live Session Results: +$550, Heads Up: 2-1

1:21am: I am operating on two hours of sleep, so I will fill you guys in on the complete details first thing in the morning when I wake up. Basic summary of the night was that I made a great comeback from -$350 to finish +$550 in my live 2-5 NL session, and I also played 3 heads up matches before I left for Harrah’s tonight — and finished 2-1.

Good luck to everyone tonight, and tomorrow as well. I will be putting in an extended heads up session tomorrow, as I have to wait for furniture to be delivered to my new home and have no clue what time the delivery men are getting there.

Live Session Results (Saturday): +$1,005

Play Online Poker

11:55pm: It pays to hold your composure. Two nights ago, when I lost $845 in a 2-5 session, it would have been very easy to panic and to get discouraged. The last two nights (+$700, +$1005) serve to show that patience and keeping things in perspective pays off — as I am now up nearly $900 this week, including the fact that I had a terrible session on Thursday night, and not including anything I have made playing heads up sngs online this week.

So how did it happen tonight? My profit came on two hands, with the same victim on each hand. I noticed the middle aged Asian man to my right was having a hard time believing anyone, and nearly refused to lay a single hand down. If he had top pair, he would cling on for dear life.

That being said, I had Jc7c in the big blind. Five people limped for $5. The flop was: 3d 5d 7s. The small blind (the man to my right) checked, and I led out for $25 to see where I was at. Everyone folded around to the small blind, who called. The pot is now $75. The turn was Jh. I led out for $75, and the man once again called. As fate would have it, the river card was a 6 — and once again, I am faced with another four-to-a-straight on the board situation. The man led out for $50. I took a little time, thought about it, and decided to just call. I turned over top two pair, and he quietly mucked his hand.

The next significant hand was about 3 hours into the session. I picked up 10c7c in the big blind, and there were 6 limpers for $5. Action was on me, so I decided to check. The flop was 4d 6s 9c. The Asian man to my right was first to act, since he was in the small blind. He led out for $5 (which doesn’t happen very often). Had there been another club out there, I would have probably raised, but since there wasn’t I decided to just call and see what happened. 3 more people called, and we go into the turn with a $55 pot. At this point, I was hoping for an 8 obviously, but would have been happy with any club as well.

Much to my delight, the 8c pops up on the turn. The man to my right led out for $25. I decided that I wanted to build the pot at this point, because I wasn’t trying to win only $100 on the hand. I decided to make it $60 to go. Everyone folded to the man to my right, and he decided to call. Of course, I’m hoping for the board not to pair, but I didn’t put the man on a set or two pair, so really there’s no card that would prevent me from betting the river. I liked my hand where it was, and it was possible he could have had a higher flush draw, so I really didn’t want to see a club. However, all things considered, the only card I was NOT hoping for was a 10, because I didn’t want to chop this pot.

The river was more beautiful than I could have imagined. That being: 5h. The board now reads: 4d 6s 9c 8c 5h . The man decides to check.

Now I have the stone cold nuts, and if the man has a 7, then he just completed a lower straight. I had to bet something that the man could check raise, if he did indeed have a 7 - but not low enough that if he just decided to call I would have been kicking myself for not getting more value out of the hand. I decided to bet $100. The man looks upset when I bet, so my first thought was that he was going to fold, and I was just going to drag this small/medium sized pot without a contest. He goes into the tank for about a minute, and then pulls out another $100, and says, “make it $200″.

This is music to my ears, of course. So then I pretend to go into the tank. I check my hand about 3-4 times to make sure I had what I thought I had (straight to the ten), and that’s indeed what I had. Well, remember how I told you the man had trouble folding earlier? This bit of information led me to believe that if I went all in, he would call thinking we were going to chop the pot. After 3 minutes of deliberation, I told the dealer was all in, and pushed my remaining $550 in the middle. This made it another $450 for him to call, which would only leave him with $8 should he decide to make the call.

The man takes nearly 5 minutes to make up his mind, but eventually acts on his impulse to never lay hand down, and pushes his remaining chips in the middle. Needless to say, he had the 7 for the straight. When he saw my hand, he was visibly upset and started cursing.

So to all those who have ever started a night, or even a week off with a catastrophic loss: whatever doesn’t kill you or your bankroll, makes you a stronger player. When you lose, brush yourself off and try again the next day. There’s plenty of poker still left to be played.

It’s a Done Deal: Lease Signed for House

Keep HFL Free

11:40am: Well, after a week or so of talks back and forth, and after much thought, my GF and I decided on going with the house over the apartment. It’s sad to see us “burn the bridge” with our apartment complex that we had learned to love, but in the end we had to make the best business decision possible.

For the next couple of hours, we will be off looking at furniture and decorations for the house (all, of course, paid for with insurance money). In the meantime, here are some pictures of the new house. Let me know what you guys think.

Good luck to anyone playing today. Have fun.

=================

After dropping the first match (0-1), I won the next two matches off of just cards alone. As stated before, I was ridiculously hot, as the hands above should show. That brings me to 2-1 on the day, 2-0 yesterday for a total of 4-1 over the last 12 hours — and FINALLY hitting $19,000 profit in the meantime! I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon, guys.

Update on my Personal “Living Situation”

Play Online Poker

10:16pm: I’ve got a decision to make. Regardless of which avenue I take, we’re signing an apartment lease by next Monday. Our original plan was to accept our previous complex’s offer to stay at a bigger apartment in a different building (the J building caught fire, and we would be moving to the W building). However, the rent would increase $130 per month from what we were paying before the fire, which is slightly more than we’d like to be paying to live there. That being said, even despite this it was still a steal considering the market value of all the other properties in the area. We took a look at the apartment today, and were SLIGHTLY disappointed with it because we didn’t see where we were getting our $130 worth even though they claimed the new apartment had more “living space” than the one that burned down a month ago.

Fortunately, we acquired a back up plan on Saturday night during my live 2-5 session at Harrah’s New Orleans. One of my good poker buddies said that he had a spare house that he was about to put up for rent, and was just waiting for the right people to make him an offer. Not even thinking we’d like it, we passed by today and were very pleasantly surprised with the property. We now have a very tough decision to make. Making it even tougher was the fact that for just slightly more per month than my original plan to move into my 2 bedroom apartment, we would be able to move into his 3 bedroom house with utilities INCLUDED.

Some people would say this is a complete and utter steal. However, I’m not one to rush into big decisions without having weighed all the facts beforehand. Being as such, I have decided to make a side by side comparison list of the benefits and costs of each avenue, and will then make a decision from there.

What’s a good poker player without his logic anyways?

Return to the Live Game; +$400

Keep HFL Free

11:50am: It was my first live session in nearly two months, but I returned back to Harrah’s New Orleans yesterday and was able to pull out a decent winning session playing 2-5 NLHE. 30 minutes into the session I walked into trouble as I re raised to $65 from $20 with QQ and got two callers. The flop was 8 5 2, and I led out for $100 to see where i was at. I found out real quick, as the fairly tight player to my left raised it up to $400, only to get check re raised all in for $600 by the guy on my right. Although I got away fairly cheap on the hand, I was up against 55 (left) and KK (right). The set held up, as the man to my left took down a fairly sizable pot.

The rest of the night consisted of the following distribution of premium/notable hands:

AA: 0 times
KK: 4 times (1W, 3L)
QQ: 2 times (1W, 1L)
JJ: 1 time (1L)
10 10: 1 times (1L)
99: 4 times (2W, 2L)
AK: 2 times (2W)

KK and 99 were the two most frequently dealt hands pre flop. Amazingly, I flopped a full house with 99 once and filled up on the river on a lady who turned trips the other time. Unfortunately, she was really tight and I didn’t get paid off as much as I normally would have had anyone else in poker room had what she had.

That being said, the majority of the night I sat at -$200 to -$300, before going on a late run the last hour and a half of my 9 hour session. Included in that run was a great call I made with AJ against a guy who was trying to represent trips. I realized about 3 minutes into my thought process when I had to call $200 on the river that he had missed his flush draw and was trying to represent that he had been calling me down with middle pair and tripped up on the river. When I put the money into the pot, he just put his head down and mucked his hand.

All in all, it was a solid return for me as I profited $400. However, that was just a warm up and I expect better days to come. I will split my time this week between heads up matches, the blog, and live poker. This will be my first full week of full time poker since my apartment caught fire.

Good luck to everyone playing today, and happy mothers day!

Heartbreaking News: Insurance Check $10,000 Less Than Expected

RakeTheRake, the rakeback professionals, offering up to 60% rakeback

2:12am: I waited until now to post it because I was too upset to talk about it. The title says it all. Today, my GF and I received our insurance check, and it was a whole $10,000 less than we were expecting. The contents declarations sheets lists jewelry and office supplies separately from “Personal Contents”, so we assumed that we were getting the max. amount of personal contents in addition to jewelry and office supplies (which, put together totaled around $10,000). Unfortunately, both those items are INCLUDED in personal contents, which we were already maxed out on so basically we’re out $10,000 now.

This is devastating news to me, and I’m furious with the insurance company for making the policy so misleading. Why list those items on a separate line if they all fall under personal contents regardless? I told the guy how I felt, even though I knew it wasn’t going to change anything and to be honest he kind of agreed with me. He took the “I’m sorry I know where you’re coming from but I can’t change the outcome” tone, so I’m pretty much shit out of luck with this situation.

There is some slight silver lining:

  • On next years tax return, I can claim the gap between what insurance didn’t cover and what I owned - which essentially will make my poker playing tax free THIS YEAR.
  • We might still be able to take legal action when they find someone liable for having started the fire. I have to call and find out more, but we will eventually get to the bottom of it, and find out who’s liable because everyone had $100,000 liability insurance in that complex, and we are entitled to a piece of it. My GFs aunt is a lawyer, so she would take the case pro bono.
  • This will force me to put in a lot more volume, and I’m going to win 60 out of 100 matches any way you cut it. My goal is to play at least 600 matches this month, which would net me $5,700 profit if I stick to the plan.

This is definitely a bad beat for me. I sure hope you guys are rooting for me as this is definitely a time of adversity.

*EDIT* 2:24am: 3-0 so far tonight. Way too easy, but I’m focused on the prize so that always helps.

“My Story” by trujm

Play Online Poker

3:11pm: Someone asked what my story was in the forums. Another member asked me in an email about 3 weeks ago. This was my reply to him, and the response that is posted in the forums - for those of you who just check the front page.

Enjoy!

Things that have changed since this story was written:

(a) My total profit is now > $17,000 on PokerStars (see my graph)
(b) My apartment has burned down since this was written

===================

I actually began playing poker back in 2003. At the time, I was trying to make it as a professional blackjack player playing the Martingale method (if you dont know what it is, do yourself a favor and DONT look it up, lol), but needless to say, that didn’t work out for me very well. Then one night, I saw my GFs step dad playing poker online, and I honestly didn’t even know you could do such a thing at the time. I asked him about it, he referred me to PartyPoker. However, I contemplated for a while before making a deposit. During this time, I did a lot of research into whether or not poker would be a game that could be beat in the long run. I bought the book Internet Texas Hold Em by Matthew Hilger, and also Harringtons blue book. I read them and decided that poker sounded like a good thing to focus on instead of blackjack.

My first deposit was $50 on PartyPoker in November 2003, where I played I played .5/1 LIMIT hold em (absolutely no concept of bankroll management or discipline at the time - but I was actually just trying it out just to get used to the flow of the game). Needless to say, I lost the $50. I deposited $100 the next time, and lost that as well. I then deposited $200 the next time, and actually built that up to like $1200 by playing 2/4 LIMIT hold em. For the next 3-4 months or so, I was finally making consistent money playing poker, and I decided that if I could grind out like $50 a day playing 2/4 limit hold em that I would look into no limit once I got up to about $3,000. Once my bankroll was up to about $1,500 - I got stupid one night and decided to give 2/4 NL a try (once again, no BR mgmt skills at ALL at the time). Well, I lost $400 of it, decided to take a small break and start fresh playing 2/4 limit again, however it was at that time Hurricane Katrina hit in New Orleans, and I had to retreat to Texas before the storm hit.

I was stuck in Texas for a whole month because we weren’t allowed to go home before then. In Texas, I wasn’t able to work (I was a bartender/waiter at Chilis) obviously because of the hurricane. I then got a cell phone bill for $400 because of everyone using my phone during the month of the storm. With the last $1,100 to my name, I got stupid and sat in at a 5/10 NL table online. Then, one hand changed my life -

I had QcQd, and someone raised to $60 pre flop. I made it $200 to go, and he called. The flop was Qs 10s 10h. I checked and the guy bets like $120, I just called. The turn was Js.. I check again, he bets $200, I call. The river was 5s.. but time I bet, $400. He puts me all in for my last couple hundred or so, and obviously I call because I know hes got the ace of spades and caught the flush. The moment he put me in I called and jumped up and down in excitement because I just knew he doubled me up. I didn\’t even have to look at the hand because I had the nuts in my mind. So I go back to the screen and see that I have $0, and immediately I freaked out. I go back and look at the hand history, and see that he actually won the hand because like I said he had the ace of spades - and the king of spades to go with it for the royal flush. It was at that moment that I officially had a negative net worth, and there was no way I was going to be able to pay the $400 cell phone bill.

My parents decided to help me out a little, and my mom gave me $200 toward the bill for everyone having used the phone. I didn’t know what to do about the last $200 as i had absolutely nothing, and then magically one day I wake up and have $2,000 in my bank account. It was from FEMA - they gave everyone $2,000 in relief after the storm. It was literally the best thing that ever happened to me because I wouldn’t be here talking about having made it if not. I decided to take some time off, reform my ways and look into practicing proper bankroll management. After paying off some bills, I still had about $1,500 left to spare, so I decided to look into heads up sit n gos, because I had heard heads up is where you have the biggest skill edge. However, this time I deposited my money ($100) on Ultimatebet instead of PartyPoker because party\’s rake was ridiculous for heads up sngs. I started out playing $10 heads up sit n gos, and would deposit again in $100 increments, if needed.

Well, little did I know that would be my last deposit, ever. I won 56% of my heads up matches on UB, and played about 20 games a night at the time, and probably averaged $30 profit a day or so, which was good enough to just survive on at the time. I eventually went back to work, and they promoted me to bartender, where I was making like $150/night, so I was able to move up to the $20 heads up sit n gos. However, I decided to give Full Tilt a try this time. My winning percentage went up a % point despite me moving up in stakes, and I was in love with full tilt. I was able to save up $2,000 in about 4-5 weeks of playing $20 heads up matches, and with that $2,000 I decided to just take a shot at my local casino playing 2-5 NL.

This is where I truly realized how much potential i really had. Although I was still completely out of my mind for trying to play 2-5 NL with $2,000 - long story short I was able to build that $2,000 up to about $30,000 within the first 9 months of me playing. At that point, I decided my time was worth more to me playing poker than bartending, so it was at that point that I quit and went pro. With that $30,000.. I bought a new car, and used the rest of it as a bankroll for $100 heads up matches on Full Tilt (Sharkscope me if you’d like - trujm). I was able to make about $8,500 on there, with a win rate of 57%, even at the $100 level. However, I caught an extremely bad run of cards, and within a week I had lost $3,000 of the money I had made. At that point, I wasn’t mature enough to handle variance in poker, but i was smart enough to know myself at this point, so I decided to cash out $5,000, leaving me with just $1000. I took a break from heads up, and went back to playing live, and I made another $15,000 or so in about a 6 month span, but this time practicing really strict bankroll management. I was probably regarded as the best 2-5 NL player at Harrahs New Orleans during this time due to me just being extremely consistent and getting more and more disciplined by the day.

I saved up enough money to move out of my parents house, and then moved in with my GF in April of 2007 in an apartment about 5 minutes away from downtown New Orleans, for quick access to Harrahs. I underestimated the cost of living on my own, and also had to use about $10,000 of my bankroll into furnishing the apartment, leaving me with about $20,000 and some change to work with. Well, I went through a really shitty run of cards at Harrahs, lost about $5,000 and decided to take a break and go back to playing heads up. I decided that I didnt like the blind structure on full tilt anymore, so I decided to deposit $2,000 on Bodog, and $2,000 on PokerStars and leave the original $1,000 on Full Tilt, and pretty much haven’t looked back since.

I was able to make about $10,000 in 3 months on Bodog, and have made roughly $17,000 in 6 months on PokerStars. My win rate is now sicker than ever, 61% - and Im playing completely within my bankroll and would never think of ever going back to the way I was before.

Off to Watch NFL Draft; Will Play Night Session

RakeTheRake, the rakeback professionals, offering up to 60% rakeback

1:39pm: Well, it’s moment like these that make me miss my apartment and my large Sharp Aquos LCD TV. Today is draft day, and I have nothing to watch it on. Only viable solution is to go to the neighborhood wing joint and watch it on one of their many TVs, so that’s where I’m headed now. I’m sure all of this will be an afterthought when I’m handed the insurance check for $30,000. But let me go on the record as saying the first thing I will “re-purchase” from the disaster will by my TV. Everything else revolves around that.

Good luck to everyone playing a day session today. And I want to see more people posting in the message board. I’ve seen hundreds of you check it out (I check visitor logs), but only 3-4 of you have posted so far. Don’t make me have done all that hard work for nothing :)

Now 6-1 Since Return; Update on ‘Updates’

Cake Poker

11:08pm: Good news everyone. I’m 6-1 since my return to poker since the fire. I’m taking it slow for now, as I’m trying to avoid anything that would dampen my spirits at this point. It won’t be long until I’m 100% into full swing.

That said, the blog update times/frequencies should return to normal by Wednesday of this week, as I’ve had more free time in each passing day since the fire. In addition, I will also resume posting articles relating to poker strategy.

Tonight, I was able to update the daily hot chick/videos up to the 19th. Everything should be fully up to date/caught up by the end of tomorrow night.

In other news, today it took me 4 hours to get 50% done my insurance claim. As of now, the total amount of damage done is $46,750 and counting. I have a ridiculous headache from all of the paperwork. It’s a very tedious process. Come to think of it, it’s almost like being in detention. I can’t wait until this is all over.

More later..
